Clinical Evaluation of Tenoxicam (Ro 12-0068) in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis

Abstract
A double-blind clinical trial was carried out to compare the efficacy and tolerance of tenoxicam wi h those of prioxicam in patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis (30 cases) and osteoarthritis (30 case). Treatment lasted six weeks by equivalent once daily dosage (20mg). The following parameters were i - vestigated: stiffness, pain at night, pain on moving, tolerance, overall assessment of efficacy, side effec s and laboratory parameters.
In overall assessment of efficacy, excellent or good effect was observed in 17 cases (9 with R.A. a d 8 with O.A.) on tenoxicam, and in 16 cases (9 with R.A. and 7 with O.A.) on piroxicam. Moderate effe t was observed in 12 cases (6 with R.A. and 6 with O.A) on tenoxicam, and in 10 cases (4 with R.A. a d 6 with O.A.) on piroxicam. 1 case with O.A. on tenoxicam and 4 cases (2 with R.A. and 2 with 0.1 .) on piroxicam were worsened.
There was no statistically significant difference with regard to clinical efficacy or safety except t e incidence of edema: 3 cases of mild edema in tenoxicam group whereas 3 mild and 5 severe edeman piroxicam group.
In conclusion, tenoxicam has proven to be an excellent anti-inflammatory compound for the treatme t of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
